What does worry, fear, elevated heart rate or any other physical symptoms have in common?
These are all signs of anxiety.
Anxiety is a normal response when we are facing something that is uncertain and a potential threat/ danger. When anxiety becomes un-useful is when we feel a sense of threat where real danger is not present. Learning how to distinguish between your anxieties false alarm of threat/danger and real threat/danger is a very important lesson to learn.
Once this step is learned and identified, then we move towards understanding the Cognitive and Behavioral (CB of CBT) responses you are using. We look at your cognitions, thoughts about a situation and how you respond to learn your unique inner processing system and coping mechanisms. Once we have done this work, we are then ready to move towards assessing your fear hierarchy and designing an exposure program for you to face your fears one step at a time (ERP).
This protocol of CBT and ERP is the gold standard for working with anxiety and anxiety spectrum disorders including PTSD, OCD, Social Anxiety, Generalized Anxiety, Panic and Phobias.
